When Ronee Martin walked onto the stage of America’s Got Talent, she carried decades of hope and disappointment with her. At 62 years old, the legal assistant from Virginia had spent much of her life chasing a music career that never fully took off.
She explained that record deals came close but never materialized. Still, she refused to believe it was too late.
Her audition began with “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Almost immediately, something felt off. The melody sounded strained, and the emotion never quite landed.
Then the moment no contestant wants arrived.
Simon Cowell raised his hand and stopped the music. The room froze. He told her honestly that the song was not right for her voice and asked if she had another option.
For many performers, this would have been the end.
But Ronee stayed calm.
She suggested “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” and the second the music started, everything changed. Her voice opened up, rich and powerful, filled with confidence and soul.
The audience reacted instantly. The judges leaned forward in shock.
Mel B admitted she was moments away from saying no after the first song. Instead, she watched in awe as Ronee completely transformed.
